Mexico electric vehicle sales rise amid shifting automotive maintenance needs
Mexico is experiencing a significant rise in the sale of electric and hybrid vehicles. In the first half of 2026, sales of electric, plug-in hybrid, and extended-range electric vehicles reached 53,430 units, marking a 22% increase compared to the previous year.
In Baja California, 6,300 hybrid and electric units were sold between October 2024 and August 2026, placing the state 14th nationally. This accounts for 2.0% of the 314,413 units sold across Mexico during that period. While the market is concentrated in central regions like Mexico City, Nuevo León, and Jalisco, Baja California holds the fourth position among northern border states.
This shift toward electric mobility presents challenges for the automotive aftermarket. Because electric vehicles have significantly fewer moving parts—approximately 20 in the propulsion system compared to 2,000 in internal combustion engines—they require less frequent maintenance, such as oil changes or spark plug replacements. Industry experts note that while this benefits drivers through lower maintenance costs, it threatens the revenue of repair shops and service centers.
