Mexico enters final phase of FATF money laundering evaluation

Mexico is entering the final stage of the fifth round of mutual evaluations by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). The Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) announced that working meetings and the plenary session are scheduled to take place from October 26 to 30, 2026.

The evaluation process, which included visits from the FATF team starting in March 2026, examines Mexico's regulatory framework, institutional capacities, and the effectiveness of its measures to combat money laundering, terrorism financing, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The assessment focuses on both technical compliance and the practical effectiveness of the national prevention system.

In anticipation of these results, the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) and the National Guard have signed a collaboration agreement to strengthen the exchange of information. This partnership aims to improve the identification of illicit resources and the monitoring of ultimate beneficial owners. Under the agreement, the National Guard will provide data from its registries to the UIF, while the UIF will share intelligence products derived from reports received from obligated entities, ensuring strict confidentiality and legal compliance.
