Mexico to open 12,750 Universal Health Service clinics in 2027

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the launch of the Universal Health Service (SUS) starting in January 2027. The initiative aims to open 12,750 primary care clinics across 24 states federalized to IMSS Bienestar, targeting remote communities and urban areas to reduce saturation in existing health centers.

These clinics will operate under a 'zero rejection' policy, providing free care to all individuals regardless of their social security or employment status. Each facility will be equipped with internet access, computers, electronic medical records, and a basic supply of approximately 60 essential medications. The clinics will be established in repurposed municipal health houses, public spaces, and workplaces.

To support this expansion, the ISSSTE will contribute 500 clinics, with 100 already operational. The recruitment process for medical and nursing staff has already seen over 73,000 applicants.

Additionally, the 'Salud Casa por Casa' program has reported significant progress, completing over 27 million home medical consultations, primarily for seniors and people with disabilities, facilitating the referral of patients to specialized care.
