Mexico expands digital payment access for millions of small businesses
The Mexican Secretariat of Economy and Visa announced the continuation of the “Crece tu MIPYME con Pagos Digitales” program, a public‑private partnership that now enables about 692,000 micro‑ and small enterprises to accept card payments. Participating firms report an average of 16,909 MXN in monthly card sales, 36 transactions per month and a 68 % increase in sales after adopting the service. The initiative, which began with three strategic partners (BBVA, Global Payments and Getnet) and has grown to include nine additional allies such as Clip, Mercado Pago and Banorte, aims to accelerate payment digitalisation ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Separate coverage highlights the range of low‑cost or hardware‑free solutions now available to Mexican merchants. SoftPOS turns a smartphone into a contact‑less point‑of‑sale, while QR‑based options such as CoDi, Mercado Pago QR and Clip links let businesses collect payments without any terminal. These tools are regulated by Banxico and the CNBV, and commissions range from roughly 3 % to 4.5 % per transaction. The combined effort is intended to broaden financial inclusion for small retailers and entrepreneurs across the country.
