Mexico expands financial inclusion through FINABIEN and microcredit initiatives
Mexico is advancing financial inclusion through both federal programs and regional microcredit initiatives. Financiera para el Bienestar (FINABIEN) has established a network of over 1,700 branches nationwide, focusing on high-marginalization municipalities, rural areas, and indigenous or Afro-Mexican communities. Under the leadership of Director General Rocío Mejía Flores, the institution operates on four pillars: productive financing, ethical remittance services via the FINABIEN Paisan@ card, social economy credits, and popular savings.
In the municipality of Centro, FINCRECE-SOFOM is collaborating with the local Economic Development department to launch a microcredit scheme for merchants in the Zona Luz area. The program aims to provide loans ranging from 10,000 to 70,000 pesos to between 650 and 700 people, with a specific focus on women entrepreneurs. To ensure project viability, participating businesses must demonstrate at least two years of experience. The initiative seeks to offer formal credit alternatives to prevent local traders from relying on high-risk, non-transparent lenders.
