Mexico expands healthcare capacity and vaccination programs
Mexico's Ministry of Health is implementing a dual strategy focused on preventive medicine and expanding hospital capacity to establish a ‘Healthy Republic.’ Health Secretary David Kershenobich Stalnikowitz reported that 149 million vaccine doses have been administered universally and free of charge over the last two years, with child vaccination coverage exceeding 90 percent.
Key preventive initiatives include the annual administration of 30 million influenza vaccines produced in Mexico, HPV vaccinations for fifth-grade students, and respiratory syncytial virus vaccines for pregnant women. Additionally, the ‘Salud Casa por Casa’ program has conducted 24.8 million home consultations for seniors and people with disabilities.
To improve medical attention, the government has inaugurated 33 new hospitals, adding 1,535 beds through an investment of approximately 24 billion pesos. With 45 projects currently under construction and 75 in the planning stages, the administration aims to add nearly 9,000 beds across the IMSS, ISSSTE, and IMSS-Bienestar institutions by the end of the term, marking the largest expansion since 1982.
