Mexico explores energy cooperation with Indonesia and role as gas bridge to Asia
Mexico is positioning itself as a potential energy bridge between United States natural gas supplies and Asia-Pacific markets. While the country faces a strategic paradox—relying on imports for approximately 75% of its natural gas consumption to support electricity and industry—its geography offers opportunities for liquefied natural gas (LNG) expansion.
In a related development regarding energy diplomacy, Mexico and Indonesia are exploring cooperation in the natural gas and LNG sectors. Mexico’s Secretary of Energy, Luz Elena González Escobar, recently met with the Indonesian Ambassador, Toferry Primanda Soetikno, to discuss diversifying energy sources and strengthening bilateral energy sectors. While no specific supply or investment agreements have been announced, the dialogue focuses on leveraging LNG as a tool for market integration and energy security amidst shifting global geopolitical dynamics.
