Mexico extends deadline for mandatory mobile number‑CURP registration

The Mexican government’s mandatory mobile line registration, which links each phone number to the user’s CURP, has been extended. The regulator, the Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT), announced new deadlines based on the last digit of the phone number, ranging from 15 August to 31 December, after the original 30 June cut‑off proved insufficient.

To date, about 63 million lines—roughly 43.5% of the 144.5 million total—have been registered, including 40.2 million prepaid and 22.8 million post‑paid lines. The CRT clarified that telecom operators—Telcel, AT&T and Telefónica Movistar—are responsible for storing users’ CURP data, not the government. Public resistance remains high, with surveys showing around 70 % of users hesitant to register due to privacy concerns.
