Mexico faces agrifood trade deficit amid push for Arab market diversification

Mexico recorded an agrifood trade deficit of $222 million in July, as imports rose by 10.4% to $4.447 billion while exports fell slightly by 0.2% to $4.224 billion. This marks a shift from July 2025, which saw a surplus of $204 million. Despite the monthly deficit, the cumulative surplus for January through July stands at $4.448 billion, though this is a 15.9% decrease compared to the same period in the previous year.

To address trade dynamics and expand market reach, Mexico is looking toward Arab nations to diversify its agrifood exports. As the world's fifth-largest exporter of agricultural products in 2024, Mexico aims to leverage the growing food demand in Arab regions driven by population growth, urbanization, and tourism. Key products targeted for these markets include avocados, berries, lemons, and healthy snacks, with additional potential in fresh fruits, vegetables, and processed foods.
