Mexico's Morena Party Pushes AI and Social Media Regulation in Congress

The Morena parliamentary bloc in Mexico's lower house has listed the regulation of social‑media platforms and artificial‑intelligence systems as top priorities for the upcoming legislative period. The agenda calls for a national debate after the FIFA World Cup, involving Congress, experts and civil society, to examine the functioning, risks and benefits of these technologies.

President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted concerns about excessive screen use among children and adolescents, linking it to digital addiction and mental‑health impacts. Deputy Ricardo Monreal is reported to have a proposal on AI, though details remain undisclosed. The legislative package also includes reforms to the Federal Copyright Law, changes to the Industrial Property Law, and a broader anti‑corruption reform led by the Secretariat of Anticorruption and Good Governance.
