Mexico faces artisan evictions, wage protests, and debt warnings
Various social and economic developments are occurring in Mexico. In Veracruz, artisans at the Landero y Coss boardwalk face potential eviction after authorities denied extensions to their concessions. The artisans are requesting a working group and the implementation of a previously budgeted project for a second craft market to protect their livelihoods.
In the labor sector, IMSS workers and retirees in Veracruz have marched to protest a 2.9 percent wage increase, arguing it falls far short of their 10 percent demand. Meanwhile, ManpowerGroup reports positive employment outlooks for the final quarter of 2026, led by the automotive and finance sectors.
On a macroeconomic level, the IMEF warns that Mexico’s public debt could reach 55 to 60 percent of GDP by 2030 if current borrowing trends continue, citing pressures from social spending and international interest rate fluctuations.
