Mexico faces economic uncertainty as US statements threaten trade and border commerce

Mexican industry leaders warned that the United States‑Mexico‑Canada Agreement (T‑MEC) cannot be ended solely by statements from President Donald Trump. The pact, which runs until 2036 and is governed by World Trade Organization rules, could still see unilateral US tariffs, creating uncertainty for the automotive, electronics and agri‑food sectors and potentially pressuring the peso and inflation.

At the same time, travel advisories issued by the United States for safety reasons have cut cross‑border traffic by 20‑30 % in the Mexican cities of Reynosa and Matamoros. The reduction in American visitors has lowered spending in shops and restaurants, hurting local economies, although the business federation FECANACO said there is no evidence of mass store closures.
