Mexico faces energy vulnerability due to natural gas dependency

Federal Deputy Rubén Moreira Valdez of the PRI has warned of Mexico's energy vulnerability, noting that the country's natural gas storage capacity is reportedly only sufficient to cover three days of consumption. This shortage poses a significant risk to the national electricity grid, as between 54% and 60% of electricity generation depends directly on imported natural gas.

Moreira Valdez highlighted that a reduction or suspension of natural gas exports from the United States could lead to an electrical crisis, potentially paralyzing businesses and leaving households without power. He criticized the federal government for a lack of foresight, arguing that energy sovereignty cannot be achieved through rhetoric alone but requires the actual capacity to guarantee supply.

The legislator also noted that renewable energy projects, such as wind and solar power, which were promoted during the Enrique Peña Nieto administration, were halted during the current administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador. He urged the government to utilize domestic resources and diversify energy sources to mitigate the risks of heavy reliance on foreign imports.
