Mexico faces illegal logging arrests and potential $60 million in forest conservation funding

In Hidalgo, Mexico, the State Public Security Secretariat (SSPH) detained eight individuals suspected of illegal logging in the Emiliano Zapata ejido, located in the Tenango de Doria municipality. During the operation on the Tenango-Metepec state highway, authorities seized two vehicles with altered identification, timber, a chainsaw, machetes, and other tools used for forest resource exploitation. The suspects and seized items were handed over to federal authorities for investigation.

Separately, Ignacio Pichardo Lechuga, president of GLOBE Mexico, stated that Mexico could secure between 40 and 60 million dollars by implementing strategies to prevent deforestation and forest degradation. These efforts, which include the national REDD+ strategy to reduce emissions, aim to mitigate climate change and improve the quality of life in rural and indigenous communities. International support for such programs has been indicated by countries including Norway, Japan, and the United Kingdom.
