Mexico faces investment hurdles in mining and global trade

Mexico faces significant economic hurdles regarding investment and development. In the mining sector, approximately US$43 billion in potential project value remains undeveloped due to a heavy fiscal burden, incomplete legal reforms, and a backlog of permits. This stagnation threatens the country's position as a global leader in silver production, where it currently accounts for 24% of global output. The sector is a vital economic driver, supporting 400,000 direct and 2.5 million indirect jobs.

Separately, María del Carmen Bonilla, Undersecretary of Finance and Public Credit, identified global commercial uncertainty and geopolitical tensions as primary obstacles to attracting investment in Mexico. To foster development, the government is focusing on the Plan México and the National Infrastructure Plan, with a heavy emphasis on energy, which constitutes 54% of the strategy's objectives. Regarding fiscal stability, the Ministry of Finance expects the expanded fiscal deficit to be 4.1% of GDP this year, projected to reach 3.9% by 2027.
