Mexico faces critical missing persons crisis with 132,000 unlocated
Mexico is facing a critical crisis of missing persons, with the National Registry of Missing and Unlocated Persons (RNPDNO) reporting 132,844 individuals currently unlocated. The Red por los Derechos de la Infancia en México (Redim) highlights a specific emergency regarding minors, noting that 17,487 children and adolescents remain missing. In the state of Veracruz, the municipalities of Veracruz Puerto, Xalapa, and Córdoba are among the 100 locations in Mexico with the highest number of disappearances. Together, these three municipalities account for 26% of the total disappearances in Veracruz.
In Coahuila, approximately 70% of persons reported missing since 2000 remain unlocated. The state also faces challenges with forced disappearance investigations, with 32 out of 35 ongoing cases remaining inconclusive. In Jalisco, authorities have reported a shift in national rankings and have taken steps to combat recruitment through fraudulent social media accounts, deactivating 502 accounts used to deceive minors.
Families and activist collectives, such as the Movimiento por Nuestros Desaparecidos en México (MNDM), are demanding that the federal government move beyond administrative protocols to implement effective prevention, search, and justice measures.
