Mexico commemorates International Day of Victims of Enforced Disappearances
On the International Day of Victims of Enforced Disappearances, various regions in Mexico held commemorations and protests to demand justice and better institutional responses to the disappearance crisis. In Tamaulipas, authorities presented a new legal framework designed to prevent, investigate, and sanction forced disappearances to strengthen human rights training for public servants.
In Sinaloa, data from the IMDHD indicates a rising trend in disappearances, with over 7,245 cases recorded as of May 2026. A significant portion of these victims, approximately 58.93 percent, are aged between 20 and 39. Meanwhile, in Chihuahua, families and human rights organizations criticized the lack of effective state action, noting that the country has surpassed 135,000 disappeared persons.
Other regional activities included a memorial in Córdoba, Veracruz, for a family missing since 2011, and a planned commemorative ride in Xalapa. In Coahuila, the FUUNDEC-FUUNDEM collective reported searching for 380 people amidst a total of 3,000 cases in the state. In Puebla, the state government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting victims through the CEEAVI commission during local marches.
