Mexico faces rising political violence and criminal infiltration

Reports indicate a concerning trend of political violence in Mexico, where criminal activity is increasingly linked to political actors and electoral processes. According to data from the NGO Data Cívica, between January and July, 126 murders, 29 armed attacks, and 22 kidnappings were recorded in connection with political scenarios.

While these figures represent a marginal decrease from the previous year, violence remains concentrated in specific regions. Five states account for 51% of the recorded political-criminal violence: Sinaloa (13%), Guerrero (10%), Veracruz (10%), Oaxaca (9%), and Guanajuato (8%).

Concerns have been raised regarding the infiltration of the political class by organized crime and the high levels of impunity, particularly in states like Veracruz. This environment of violence is viewed by observers as a mechanism to inhibit citizen participation and social mobilization ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
