Mexico faces rising school violence and bullying

Mexico is facing a significant escalation in school violence and bullying. President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the issue, stating that there must be a limit to such behavior and that all forms of violence in schools must be stopped.

Data indicates a severe trend: over 25 violent aggressions have been recorded in schools over the last 12 years, resulting in at least 16 deaths, including both victims and aggressors. The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) reports that seven out of ten children in basic education have experienced bullying, while the OECD ranks Mexico first internationally for bullying cases.

Recent incidents include a stabbing in Torreón, Coahuila, where two former students killed a deputy director and injured four others. In Hermosillo, four adolescents were investigated for the physical assault of a transgender student. Statistics from the Network for the Rights of Children (REDIM) show that Mexico City, the State of Mexico, and Hidalgo report the highest concentrations of physical and sexual violence in schools.
