Mexico faces rising suicide and depression rates

Mexico is experiencing a significant rise in suicide rates and mental health issues. According to data from INEGI, national suicide numbers increased by over 27% between 2015 and 2025, rising from 6,425 to 8,846 annual events. In the State of Mexico, the rate nearly doubled, increasing by 49% during the same period.

Criminologist Klaudia Alejandra Hernández Rivera identifies frustration over unfulfilled academic, professional, and economic expectations as a primary driver, particularly among younger populations. She notes that structural issues, such as lack of job opportunities or career growth, contribute to clinical depression and suicidal ideation.

In the state of Coahuila, depression diagnoses have surged by approximately 162% since 2020, rising from 1,091 to 2,867 cases in 2025. Suicidal ideation in the region also saw a sharp increase of over 202% between 2023 and 2025. Data indicates that women are disproportionately affected, accounting for over 70% of depression diagnoses and approximately 68% of suicidal ideation cases in Coahuila.
