Mexico faces surge in Russian intelligence espionage
A high-ranking official in the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that Mexico is facing an influx of Russian intelligence agents operating under various forms of cover. The Kremlin is reportedly utilizing members of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) and the military intelligence directorate (GRU) to infiltrate the country.
These agents are allegedly using two primary methods of concealment: diplomatic status provided by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which grants them immunity, and business personas. The latter involves individuals entering Mexico as businessmen to gather information while conducting marginal commercial activities.
Officials noted that the recent wave of Russian migration following the invasion of Ukraine has made tracking these individuals more difficult. Locations such as Cancún have been identified as significant points of entry and operation, where the high volume of Russian arrivals complicates efforts to distinguish intelligence assets from legitimate residents.
