Mexico's CNTE teacher protests halt capital official agenda

President Claudia Sheinbaum said the federal government will not respond with repression to the Coordinadora Nacional de los Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE) demonstrations and will keep the 2026 World Cup inauguration peaceful. She noted that some groups seek to provoke confrontations, while ISSSTE head Martí Batres warned that the CNTE’s pension proposal would cost more than 7 trillion pesos—about 20 % of Mexico’s GDP.

In Mexico City, mayor Clara Brugada suspended her public program after CNTE protesters blocked Calzada de Tlalpan, cancelling the planned inauguration of the Line 14 trolley‑bus and related metro station works. The event was taken over by other secretaries, and the rest of her agenda was rescheduled. Government officials emphasized ongoing dialogue with teachers and the continuation of work on the protests’ demands.
