Mexico families protest missing persons crisis at Toluca stadium

Families of people who have disappeared in Mexico turned the area around Toluca’s Nemesio Díez stadium into a memorial and advocacy space on the eve of the friendly match between the Mexican and Serbian national teams. Hundreds of search cards, photographs and messages were posted on walls, poles and public furniture, highlighting more than 140,000 nationwide missing persons and over 14,000 cases in the State of Mexico. Organisers from the “Flores en el Corazón” collective stressed that the demonstration was not against football but aimed to draw national and international media attention to a humanitarian crisis they say has received insufficient governmental response. Participants urged authorities not to remove the cards, calling each a “life, a story and the desperate effort of a family seeking the truth.” The protest also called for stronger work by prosecutors and warned that disappearances and femicides are increasing in the region.

The timing was chosen to reach the large crowds expected for the Mexico‑Serbia match and to leverage coverage ahead of Mexico’s preparation for the 2026 World Cup, hoping the visibility will lead to new information that could help locate missing individuals.
