Mexico files 20 U.S. complaints over 17 migrant deaths in ICE custody

Mexico has filed 20 legal complaints in the United States seeking criminal accountability for the deaths of 17 Mexican nationals. These deaths occurred during migration operations or while individuals were in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Foreign Affairs Secretary Roberto Velasco Álvarez reported that the complaints were distributed across eight U.S. states, including Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Missouri, and Texas. Of the 20 filings, eight were submitted to state prosecutors and 12 to district attorneys. To date, U.S. authorities have responded to only four of these complaints.

In Florida, officials stated they would not pursue further investigation, as their findings align with an ICE report concluding one death was a suicide. Conversely, prosecutors in Ventura, California; Cook, Illinois; and Harris, Texas, have indicated they will evaluate the cases for potential legal action.

President Claudia Sheinbaum directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to handle these filings directly to ensure thorough investigations. Additionally, the Mexican government has provided 24,788 USD to assist families, primarily for the repatriation of remains.
