Mexico fuel prices show regional disparity amid rising import costs

Baja California currently holds the lowest diesel prices in Mexico, according to a report by TResearch International. As of July 2026, the state ranks first nationally for diesel at 26.6 pesos per liter, while also maintaining prices for Magna and Premium gasoline that fall below the national average.

However, experts warn of broader economic pressures regarding fuel costs in Mexico. High international demand from the United States and Europe, coupled with conflicts in the Middle East, is driving up global diesel prices. Because Mexico imports seven out of every ten liters of diesel consumed, these rising costs create structural vulnerabilities.

To maintain price caps, the Mexican government may need to implement IEPS tax stimuli. The price volatility is expected to impact Pemex, the government, and fuel importers, potentially reducing returns available for future investments.
