Mexico education ministry rolls out reforms and $23 bn school investment

Secretary of Education Mario Delgado Carrillo said the State‑magisterio relationship has been rebuilt and announced the dissolution of the Unidad del Sistema para la Carrera de las Maestras y los Maestros (USICAMM). A school‑by‑school consultation will begin before the 2026‑2027 cycle to draft a new reform.

The ministry highlighted historic salary increases for teachers, the creation of a pension fund for wellbeing, and the suspension of the planned rise in retirement age. Around one million teachers participated permanently in the Octava Sesión Ordinaria del Consejo Técnico Escolar, which was described as a network of learning communities.

Through the La Escuela es Nuestra (LEEN) program, 23 billion pesos have been allocated to upgrade infrastructure, equipment and works in 72,000 schools nationwide. Additional federal and state funds will support projects such as a 300 million‑peso investment to renovate 214 schools in Tamaulipas, new inclusive classrooms and a sensory “Snoezelen” room in Tepoztlán, and the inclusion of Zacatecas primary schools in LEEN, making the state the only one with that benefit.

Other initiatives mentioned include the continuation of the Beca Rita Cetina for ten million primary students, the national Vive Saludable, Vive Feliz health strategy, and large‑scale events such as the 2026 Mundialito Escolar involving more than a million pupils.
