Mexico Government Pushes Dialogue with Teacher Protesters Amid Transparency Reform

President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration is urging dialogue with the Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE) as teachers stage mobilisations over labor demands. The government stresses that protests should remain peaceful and that negotiations, not pressure tactics, are the preferred path.

At the same time, a 2024 constitutional reform has overhauled Mexico’s access‑to‑information framework. The reform eliminates autonomous oversight bodies and creates a new Agency of Transparency that will operate under the state Comptroller, sparking criticism that its lack of constitutional autonomy could weaken accountability and citizens’ right to information.
