Mexico government reports 19% teacher pay rise and plans further hikes
The federal government said that over the past eight years, the teaching profession in Mexico has received a cumulative salary increase of 19%, the first such rise in more than 36 years.
President Claudia Sheinbaum authorised an additional 10% increase for 2025 and a 9% increase for 2026. Education Secretary Mario Delgado noted that the 2025 Labour Mobility Decree allowed 75,000 teachers to transfer to preferred locations, and that more than 1.2 million teachers have been regularised (“basificados”), giving them job stability. The measures are presented as a response to the CNTE’s demand for a 100% salary hike. The government said, “A partir de 2018 comenzó una política sostenida de recuperación salarial…”, and added, “Los hechos son contundentes: recuperación salarial, movilidad laboral transparente y basificación masiva constituyen avances sin precedente para el magisterio.”
