Mexico grapples with labor shortages in tourism and trucking sectors

In Cancún, a municipal job fair offered 1,700 vacancies across transport, supermarkets and auto‑service firms, but only about 480 job‑seekers attended. Officials attributed the shortfall to low wages, limited benefits and a rise in self‑employment. A follow‑up fair is scheduled for 10 August at the municipal palace.

In Tamaulipas, the state faces a deficit of more than 10,000 fifth‑wheel truck operators. Labor Secretary Gerardo Illoldi Reyes reported that 500 operators have been placed so far, with salaries reaching up to 50,000 pesos per month. The government is running training and recruitment campaigns, including efforts to attract women to the sector, and has placed 6,906 workers this year, covering 42.7 % of its annual target.
