Mexico, Guatemala authorities rescue animals, bust wildlife trafficking

In Campeche, Mexico, environmental officials seized 19 animals from a private property after a citizen complaint, including 16 Chihuahua dogs, two rabbits and a protected yellow‑headed parrot. The animals were placed under protection pending sterilisation, and the owners face possible fines and imprisonment for animal cruelty and illegal possession of protected wildlife.

In Petén, Guatemala, police from the National Civil Police and the Division of Protection to Nature arrested two men, Jairo N (23) and Melvin N (21), who were transporting three red‑fronted parrot chicks illegally on a motorcycle. The chicks were rescued and handed to the National Council of Protected Areas, while the suspects were presented to a court.

Both incidents illustrate coordinated enforcement actions against illegal wildlife trafficking in the two countries.
