Mexico health officials warn of silent progression of kidney disease and diabetes
Health authorities in Mexico have issued warnings regarding the silent progression of chronic kidney disease and the complications arising from diabetes and hypertension. Chronic kidney disease can advance through five stages over several years without obvious symptoms, often remaining undetected until significant damage has occurred. Key symptoms in advanced stages include swelling in the extremities, persistent itching, nausea, vomiting, and altered consciousness.
Diabetes and hypertension are identified as primary drivers of renal failure in Mexico. These conditions also pose a severe threat to vision by damaging the small blood vessels in the retina, which can lead to irreversible blindness. Data indicates a high prevalence of these issues, with millions of adults living with type 2 diabetes, many of whom are unaware of their condition or lack proper glucose control.
Medical experts recommend preventive measures such as maintaining proper hydration, eating a healthy diet low in sodium and sugar, avoiding tobacco, and moderating alcohol consumption to protect kidney function.
