Mexico heat island study identifies 728 vulnerable bus stops

The Institute of Mobility and Accessibility (IMA) has identified 728 bus stops in Mexico located within urban heat islands. A study of 7,411 transit points across nine municipalities revealed that 10 percent of these stops are concentrated in areas with the highest detected temperatures.

The research categorized stops into those with existing infrastructure—such as seating, roofs, and signage—and those without any structures. The IMA noted that installing physical shelters could serve as a measure to mitigate heat exposure for users. The municipalities with the highest percentage of bus stops located in heat island zones are Escobedo, Monterrey, San Nicolás, and Apodaca.
