Mexico reports 268 homicides in final week of August

Mexico recorded 268 homicides during the final week of August 2026, marking a 6.35% increase compared to the previous week. Data from the Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana (SSPC) shows that Guanajuato and Sinaloa remain among the most affected regions. While Guanajuato led the weekly count with 32 cases, Sinaloa recorded the highest total for the month of August with 113 victims.

In her second government report, President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that her administration has achieved a 51% reduction in intentional homicides, averaging 44 fewer murders per day. She noted that July recorded the lowest daily average in 11 years. The administration attributes these trends to a strategy involving the National Guard, intelligence strengthening, and coordination between federal and state authorities.

Despite these reported decreases in long-term averages, recent weekly data indicates localized spikes in violence. States such as Michoacán, Baja California, and Chihuahua also reported high numbers of incidents during this period.
