Mexico household spending profile released by INEGI

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) has released the 2025 National Expenditure Survey (ENG), providing a detailed profile of household spending in Mexico. The survey, which monitored over 28,000 homes, reveals that the average household spent 24,801 pesos per month on its consumption basket. Of this total, 19,310 pesos were monetary expenditures, while 5,491 pesos accounted for non-monetary spending, such as self-consumption or rent savings.

More than half of the monetary budget is dedicated to essential services: 34.9 percent is spent on food, beverages, and tobacco, while 20 percent is allocated to transport and communications. Notably, spending on eating out—averaging 1,394 pesos monthly—surpassed spending on meat and vehicle fuel.

In terms of mobility, the highest expenditures were seen in collective transport, such as microbuses, followed by taxis and urban buses. Additionally, the survey noted an increase in spending on ride-hailing applications like Uber and DiDi. Other significant household costs include electricity, water, and mobile phone plans.
