Mexico Human Rights Commission addresses press violence and prison security

The Human Rights Commission of the State of Mexico (CODHEM) has highlighted the critical situation facing journalists and their families. In a recent podcast episode, activist and legal advisor Priscilla Pacheco Romero discussed the systemic impunity in Mexico, noting that 98 percent of crimes committed against the press remain unpunished. Pacheco Romero, whose father was an investigative journalist murdered in 2016, emphasized that such violence violates the collective right of society to be informed and causes secondary victimization through bureaucratic delays and forced displacement of families.

Separately, CODHEM acted as an observer during a security operation at the Otumba Tepachico Penitentiary and Social Reinsertion Center. Supported by the National Guard, prison authorities conducted inspections in both male and female areas, resulting in the seizure of prohibited items. CODHEM monitored the proceedings to ensure respect for human rights and the constitutional principle of separating male and female inmates during their sentences.
