Mexico implements healthy and sustainable food guidelines

Mexico is advancing the implementation of its Healthy and Sustainable Food Guides through inter-institutional cooperation. The initiative aims to promote healthy eating habits to combat rising rates of overweight and obesity, which currently affect 40% of schoolchildren, 50% of adolescents, and 70% of adults in the country.

According to Daniel Aceves Villagrán, Director General of Public Health Policies at the Federal Ministry of Health, the guides integrate nutrition with agriculture and environmental sustainability. The strategy encourages the consumption of fresh, local foods and the recovery of traditional dietary patterns, such as the 'milpa' diet based on corn, beans, squash, and chili.

The implementation includes the 'Vive Saludable, Vive Feliz' strategy, which reaches approximately 11 million students across 83,000 schools.
