Mexico implements labor reforms and minimum wage increases

Mexico is experiencing significant labor transformations characterized by substantial increases in the minimum wage and ongoing legislative efforts to improve worker rights. Since 2018, the daily minimum wage has risen from 88.36 pesos to 315.04 pesos in 2026, a trend attributed to policies initiated under former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and continued by President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Legislative developments include the pursuit of a 40-hour work week by 2030 and the approval of the ‘Ley Silla’. Additionally, efforts are underway to integrate digital platform workers, such as delivery drivers and drivers, into the formal social security system through the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).

Other regulatory focuses include combating tax evasion and illegal hydrocarbon trade through electronic payment regulations, as well as amending customs laws to prevent the undervaluation of imported goods to protect domestic industry.
