Mexico implements new health model for cardio-renal-metabolic syndrome
Mexico’s Ministry of Health is implementing a new national model to address cardio-renal-metabolic syndrome. This strategy aims to integrate the prevention, detection, and treatment of cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic diseases, which are frequently interconnected.
Health Secretary David Kershenobich stated that the initiative will focus on primary care to identify risks before serious complications arise. The protocol includes mandatory recording of weight, height, and blood pressure during consultations, along with annual blood and urine tests. New treatment approaches will be utilized, including medications like semaglutide for type 2 diabetes and combined capsules for hypertension.
The move responds to significant health challenges in the country: approximately 21.3 million people live with hypertension, 14.4 million with diabetes, and 9.2 million with chronic kidney disease. In the state of Sinaloa, cardiovascular issues remain a critical concern, with officials reporting roughly six deaths per day due to heart attacks.
