Mexico implements new technologies and alliances for marine conservation

In Cozumel, researchers and marine brigades have launched new 3D digital cartography to protect coral reefs. Supported by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp), these interactive models allow for the precise geolocation of coral colonies and the detection of environmental damage. The technology covers depths between 9 and 35 meters in key areas such as Palancar, Colombia, and Santa Rosa Wall, helping to monitor the impact of climate change and coral diseases within the Great Mayan Reef.

Additionally, the Mexican Institute for Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture Research (IMIPAS) and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) have established a strategic alliance to manage sargassum in the Mexican Caribbean. This project focuses on the containment, research, and sustainable use of the macroalgae. By integrating oceanographic data with the local knowledge of fishing communities, the initiative aims to optimize collection methods and evaluate the environmental and social implications for coastal sectors.
