Mexico implements solar panel program to reduce household electricity costs

The Mexican federal government is implementing the ‘Techos Solares para el Bienestar’ program to help families reduce electricity costs by utilizing solar energy. The initiative has already seen installations in over 5,300 homes across Mexicali, San Felipe, and Hermosillo, specifically targeting regions like Baja California and Sonora where extreme heat is common.

Under the program, beneficiary households receive two 600-watt panels and a cooling system. According to the Secretaría de Energía (SENER), these installations could potentially reduce annual electricity bills by up to 60%.

However, the rapid rollout has raised concerns within the photovoltaic industry regarding the quality and safety of the installations. Marco Antonio Guzmán, president of the Asociación Mexicana de la Industria Fotovoltaica (AMIF), has emphasized the need for proper execution to ensure equipment security and long-term reliability.
