Mexico IMSS Study Boosts Early Detection of Anal Cancer in HIV Patients

Researchers at the Hospital de Infectología "Dr. Daniel Méndez Hernández" within the Centro Médico Nacional La Raza of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) released results of the GAIA 2 study. The investigation focuses on strengthening prevention and early detection of anal cancer among people living with HIV, who face a markedly higher risk of high‑risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection.

Using PCR to identify HPV genotypes and anal cytology similar to a Pap smear, the study confirmed that men who have sex with men and are HIV‑positive can have up to a 60‑fold increased risk of anal cancer compared with the general population. Findings emphasize the importance of routine screening and highlight the nonavalent HPV vaccine as a highly effective measure to reduce precancerous lesions, even for adults over 30, those with prior high‑grade lesions, or existing HPV‑related cancers.

The researchers advocate expanding vaccination programs and regular anal cytology exams to improve early diagnosis and treatment outcomes for this vulnerable group.
