Mexico increases Pacific bluefin tuna catch limit for 2027-2028
Mexico has secured an increase in its commercial catch limit for Pacific bluefin tuna for the 2027-2028 period. Following the 104th meeting of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (CIAT) held in Lisbon, Portugal, the country's quota will rise from 10,763 to 11,256 tons, representing a 4.6 percent increase.
The agreement also raises the maximum allowable catch for a single year from 6,296 to 7,035 tons. This new management scheme was jointly promoted by Mexico, Japan, and the United States, utilizing scientific data to provide greater stability and predictability for this economically and strategically significant fishery.
Additionally, the Mexican delegation presented an initiative to coordinate CIAT's work with the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ). The proposal seeks to enhance scientific and technical coordination, information exchange, and cooperation on area-based conservation measures.
