Mexico increases scrutiny of LP gas safety following explosions and facility closures

Authorities in Mexico are increasing scrutiny of LP gas operations following safety incidents and regulatory failures. In Cuernavaca, federal deputy Magda Erika Salgado Ponce has called for investigations and sanctions against Tomza Gas Titanium following an August 6 explosion in the Las Granjas neighborhood that resulted in a fatality.

Salgado Ponce requested that federal, state, and municipal authorities review safety protocols, vehicle mechanical conditions, and permits for gas transport units. The request follows previous incidents involving the company, including a fatal explosion in Iztapalapa. President Claudia Sheinbaum has also indicated that the company could face new sanctions if safety violations are proven.

In Mérida, Yucatán, municipal authorities have shuttered a gas facility in the Mil Piedras neighborhood. The closure was prompted by resident complaints and potential risks to the community. The establishment was suspended for allegedly failing to meet Civil Protection protocols, including requirements for fire systems, electrical installations, and safe storage and handling of LP gas.
