United States inflation holds at 3.4% amid rising fuel costs

United States inflation remained at 3.4% in August, meeting market expectations but staying above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. While core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, moderated to 2.4%, the overall Consumer Price Index (CPI) was heavily influenced by rising energy costs.

Fuel prices have seen a significant surge, driven by geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions. Gasoline prices rose 3.9% in August, and diesel prices reached a historic high, exceeding $6 per gallon on average. The rise in crude oil prices, with Brent crude hovering near $100 per barrel, has contributed to broader economic pressure, potentially increasing the cost of transporting goods and food.

The persistent inflation data has intensified expectations that the Federal Reserve may raise interest rates during its upcoming meeting to curb price increases. While the stability of the inflation figure provided some relief to markets like the Dow Jones, the combination of high energy costs and elevated interest rates continues to impact consumer confidence and household budgets.
