Mexico initiatives target SME digitalization and e-commerce growth
In Ciudad Juárez, the municipal government has registered over 1,300 companies through the PYMAIS platform following a 2-million-peso investment. More than 60 percent of these businesses are local. The program, supported by the General Directorate of Economic Development, has also provided 25 specialized training scholarships for ISO 9001:2005 certification. Future strategies include alliances with Microsoft and TechSpark to connect small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with binational industry buyers.
On a national level, Senator Alejandra Berenice Arias Trevilla has proposed that the Secretariat of Economy strengthen training programs to help SMEs adopt e-commerce and digital tools. This initiative follows 2024 INEGI census data showing that out of 5.4 million surveyed companies, only 302,000 conducted sales online. The proposal emphasizes that digitalization can expand market reach and improve competitiveness, noting that micro-enterprises, which make up 95.5 percent of the country's economic units, currently show the lowest digital adoption rates.
