Mexico reports 1.6 million displaced by violence; Sheinbaum requests INEGI review

New data from INEGI’s 2025 Intercensal Survey reveals that between October 2020 and October 2025, approximately 510,000 households—representing roughly 1.6 million people—experienced forced displacement due to violence or insecurity in Mexico. In contrast, about 152,000 households reported displacement caused by natural or human-made disasters, affecting approximately 486,000 people.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has requested that INEGI review its measurement methodology. She noted that in states like Guerrero, displacement may be conflated between criminal violence and the aftermath of major hurricanes such as Otis and John. The administration aims to determine if more specific surveys are needed to distinguish between these drivers.

Separately, the 2025 Global Organized Crime Index ranks Mexico first globally in the dimension of criminal markets, with a score of 8.27 out of 10. The country also placed third globally in overall criminality with a score of 7.68. Specific illicit markets, including cocaine and synthetic drugs, both received scores of 9.00 out of 10.
