Mexico Interoceanic Train suffers 21 accidents since 2023 launch

Since its inauguration in December 2023, the Interoceanic Train’s Line Z has recorded 21 incidents, averaging one mishap roughly every 45 days. The “Análisis Causa Raíz del Ferrocarril Interoceánico” report documents 14 accidents in 2024, six in 2025—including a crash on 28 December 2025 that killed 14 passengers—and a cargo‑train accident on the night of 14 July 2026.

The majority of events involve landslides, track collapses and vehicle overruns at level crossings, many caused by drivers violating traffic rules. The first recorded incident was a derailment on 2 February 2024 on the Coatzacoalcos‑to‑Salina Cruz corridor, followed by a second derailment the next day and a series of further collisions, overruns and landslides through 2025 and 2026.
