Mexico implements new energy sector national content methodology

Mexico's Ministry of Economy has introduced a new methodology to measure and certify national content within the energy sector, specifically targeting hydrocarbons, electricity, and biofuels. Announced by Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard, the initiative aims to increase local content from the current 35% to over 40%, a move projected to represent approximately $60 billion in economic value.

A key component of the plan is the significant reduction in certification timelines; for the hydrocarbon sector, the process will be shortened from 18 months to just 90 days. This streamlined approach is intended to provide greater transparency for investors and facilitate easier compliance for companies using Mexican goods and services.

In related economic news, INEGI estimates indicate that Mexico's economic activity grew by 3.7% annually in September 2026, though monthly growth remained marginal at 0.1%. Additionally, the Mexican Senate's Social Economy Commission has approved its favorable opinion on the 2027 Federal Expenditure Budget Project.
