Mexico invests in preservation of Cacaxtla murals and Texcoco archaeological sites

Mexican authorities are conducting extensive preservation and rehabilitation efforts across various archaeological sites. In Cacaxtla, the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and the National Coordination for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage (CNCPC) report that the site's pre-Hispanic murals have shown no significant damage over the last 15 years.

Restorers are utilizing colorimetry and optical microscopy to establish a long-term evaluation methodology for the 16 murals attributed to the Olmeca-Xicalanca culture. This data collection aims to maintain a precise record of the chromatic range and technical execution to monitor conservation levels effectively.

Additionally, over 3.7 million pesos have been invested in the rehabilitation of three archaeological zones in Texcoco: Tetzcotzinco, Huexotla, and Los Melones. These works, part of a broader national program, include tasks such as graffiti removal, structural consolidation using lime and sand mortars, vegetation control, and the restoration of stone elements and hydraulic systems to safeguard historical memory.
