Mexico issues first government Biodiversity Bond in Latin America

The Mexican Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRICULTURA) and FIRA have issued the first government Biodiversity Bond in Latin America. The issuance, totaling 1,657 million pesos, was marked by a ceremony at the Mexican Stock Exchange in Mexico City.

The funds are designated to finance sustainable development, productivity, and environmental conservation projects. Key initiatives include sustainable agriculture, responsible soil management, the reduction of harmful agrochemicals, and innovation through precision agriculture. The bond also supports agroecology and organic or regenerative farming practices.

Columba Jazmín López Gutiérrez, head of AGRICULTURA, described the instrument as a historical milestone for the agricultural sector, noting that it aligns financial innovation with socio-environmental commitment to protect ecosystems and restore biodiversity.
